Foreground, Middleground, and Background

I'm always looking for new lesson ideas for teaching the third graders about foreground, middleground, and background. We did these simple glue and pastel images this year, but do you all have any good lessons that work for you? I'm picking your brains!

  1. I haven't had a lot of success with the concept. I did oil pastels last year, after we'd practiced all the grounds, overlapping, and size variation. Some students applied that lesson; but too many did not. If we had the same class two or three times a week, it probably would make it easier. :-) I thought the other day that I should introduce all these concepts from kindergarten up--every year.

  2. It's always been a toughie for me, too. I'm never quite pleased with the results. Thanks, though!
